The pilot of Continental Flight 61 died over the Atlantic Ocean. Co-pilot and flight engineer look to be about to land the aircraft, a Boeing 777 carrying 247 passengers, any time now in Newark.

-- Steve's starting to think that trans-Atlantic ocean liners might be a good idea after all.

Some people will do anything to get out of flying into Newark.
...
Too soon?

Everything I've read has said that the third person wasn't just a co-pilot but a pilot meant to "spell" the original. They landed without incident.

He died of natural causes, apparently.

Really, this was an inevitable happenstance, as I see it, just like some people are going to have a stroke while driving the car.

Yeah, later reports say that the person in the second seat was a "relief pilot".

It's my understanding that generally there isn't much difference between the captain of an aircraft and the co-pilot; they're both fully qualified to fly the plane they're on, so having the co-pilot land a plane isn't a big deal in and of itself. That's why he's there, after all, for exactly this situation among others, although of course I'm sure it was kinda freaky to have a co-worker just up and die on you.
